30 Tons Per Hour Water Treatment Machine for Coca-Cola Project

Installation Site: Sri Lanka

Project Overview

Coca-Cola, as part of its global sustainability initiative, has implemented numerous water stewardship projects worldwide to address water scarcity, improve water quality, and promote sustainable water management. One notable example is the partnership with local communities and NGOs to restore watersheds and improve water access in water-stressed regions.

Objectives

  • Water Replenishment: To replenish 100% of the water used in Coca-Cola’s beverages by 2020 (a goal achieved globally in 2015).
  • Community Water Access: To improve access to clean water for local communities.
  • Watershed Restoration: To restore and protect local watersheds through sustainable practices.
  • Water Efficiency: To reduce water usage in manufacturing processes.

Implementation

1. Rainwater Harvesting

Coca-Cola partnered with local organizations to build rainwater harvesting structures, such as check dams and recharge wells, to capture and store rainwater. This helped replenish groundwater levels and provided a sustainable water source for communities.

2. Community Water Facilities

The company installed water filtration systems and hand pumps in villages, ensuring access to clean drinking water for thousands of residents.

3. Watershed Management

Coca-Cola worked with farmers to promote water-efficient irrigation techniques, such as drip irrigation, and implemented afforestation programs to restore degraded lands and improve water retention in the soil.

4. Manufacturing Efficiency

Coca-Cola’s bottling plants in the region adopted advanced water treatment technologies to reduce water usage and recycle wastewater, achieving significant reductions in water consumption per liter of beverage produced.

Results

  • Water Replenishment: The project successfully replenished more than 100% of the water used in Coca-Cola’s operations in the region.
  • Community Impact: Over 50,000 people gained access to clean drinking water, and agricultural yields improved due to better water management practices.
  • Environmental Benefits: Watershed restoration efforts led to increased groundwater levels and improved biodiversity in the region.
  • Operational Efficiency: Coca-Cola’s bottling plants reduced water usage by 25%, setting a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates Coca-Cola’s commitment to water stewardship and its ability to create shared value for both the environment and local communities. By addressing water scarcity and improving water management, Coca-Cola has set an example for corporate responsibility in sustainable water use.
